MRSA Support - PRACTICAL HELP
DOs AND DON'Ts IN HOSPITAL
DO
- If there is dust or dirt around or under your bed, ask for the area to be cleaned.
- Wash with bactericidal soap before visiting, or admission to, hospital.
- ALWAYS wear shoes or slippers.
- Always dispose of used tissues into a plastic bag.
- Watch the staff with regard to yourself.
- Ensure that toilets are clean before using them.
- Use an antibacterial cream on your skin at the site of the incision just prior to being taken for surgery.
DON'T
- Get too close to other patients.
- "Put up" with soreness or discomfort. (Sores are effectively open wounds.)
- Put bare feet on the floor.
- Use tissues more than once.
- Allow nurses, doctors or other medics to examine your open wounds, catheters or other vulnerable sites without first putting on a head covering face mask and then washing their hands.
- Breathe at your own open wounds or vulnerable sites. (If you must look at them, deflect your breath away from the site or wear a mask.)

GOING INTO HOSPITAL KIT
Pearson & Black of Cleveland provides this kit. It consists of a bedding and clothing disinfectant, body spray, a hard surface disinfectant, a hand wash, hand gel, shampoo and body wash, an immuno-stimulator (Homeopathic) and 5 surgical facemasks. The total cost is £45.00 (including postage and packing). When used in accordance with the instructions anyone going into hospital should have a reasonable degree of protection from all Hospital Acquired Infections. We think the pack represents good value for money as it puts together all the necessary items for one's protection and compares favourably with purchasing the items separately.

MEDIHONEY - Australia.
This is honey formulated for application on wound dressings. Further details can be obtained from www.medihoney.com
SKINSURE CREAM/LOTION
This is the famous cream formulated by Brian Bennett and now being trialled by nurses in two hospitals. There are three grades available, Skinsure Daily, Skinsure Plus and Skinsure Ultra. The latter two act as a barrier cream as well as being a skin emollient. Laboratory tests have proved that the plus and ultra formulations keep the skin free from MRSA and other bacteria for 4hrs. The cream is available from most ASDA store pharmacies, or telephone the helpline on 01237 473128.
VIRUSOLVE+
Manufactured and patented by Amity UK this product is claimed to be a cleaner and disinfectant which is effective against a wide range of bacteria. It was given a rating by the Rapid Review Panel lower than it should have, only because the company would not release the complete formulae to the RRP without guarantees of confidentiality, which the RRP was not prepared to give. This is shabby treatment of a company which is trying to alleviate suffering by researching an effective disinfectant which is safe to use and environmentally friendly.
